Your Skin Deserves the Same Standard You Hold Your Horse To

Horse people are meticulous. We read labels on feed, we research farriers, we debate supplements like it's a doctoral thesis. We would never buy a generic wormer and call it good. And yet, somewhere between the tack room and the trailer, a lot of us are slapping on whatever SPF was on sale at the gas station and calling it a day.

That ends now.

PresenceMD is officially carrying EltaMD and PCA Skin, and we are bringing their best sellers directly to the horse shows. No dermatologist appointment required. No waiting on shipping. No sketchy third-party Amazon seller of unknown origin. Just genuinely good skincare, available right there on the grounds where you are already spending your weekends cooking in the sun.

Let me tell you why these two brands specifically, and why where you buy them actually matters.

There is a meaningful difference between a product that is "dermatologist approved" and one that dermatologists actively recommend more than any other brand in its category. EltaMD is the latter. It holds the title of the number one dermatologist-recommended professional sunscreen brand, and that is not marketing language. That is the result of decades of working directly with dermatologists, putting clinical rigor above everything else, and formulating products that are genuinely effective rather than merely adequate.

The formulas are zinc oxide-based, lightweight, and designed to wear beautifully across all skin tones. They protect against both UVA and UVB damage without the white cast that makes a lot of us skip SPF altogether. They layer well under makeup. They do not feel greasy on skin that is already working hard in the heat.

EltaMD also backs its mission beyond the product. The brand has a longstanding partnership with the Melanoma Research Foundation, and their commitment is substantial. This past month, for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, they launched a buy-one-give-one program tied to their UV Daily SPF 40, donating up to one million dollars in product to the Melanoma Research Foundation to expand access to sun protection for those who need it most.

That matters to me as a physician. Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. More people are diagnosed with it than all other cancers combined. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Horse people, who spend entire careers in direct sun across arena after arena, are not a low-risk group. Choosing a sunscreen that dermatologists trust and that actively supports melanoma research is not a small thing.

PCA Skin was founded in 1990 by a dermatologist and an esthetician, which tells you something important about the philosophy. It was built from the beginning around the idea that clinical results and real-world usability do not have to be in conflict. The formulas use ingredients that work synergistically, things like lactic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and targeted brightening agents, to address the concerns that actually matter: sun damage, uneven tone, texture, aging, and the kind of skin neglect that accumulates when you spend more time thinking about your horse's skin than your own.

PCA Skin has performed over one million professional peels annually. Their products are used and trusted by estheticians and dermatologists alike. The science is real, and the results are visible, which is a combination that is harder to find than the marketing on most skincare shelves would lead you to believe.

We are carrying their best sellers, the products that consistently get recommended because they consistently deliver.

EltaMD and PCA Skin are physician-channel brands. That means they are primarily distributed through authorized physicians, dermatologists, and licensed skincare professionals. This is intentional. These brands built their reputations inside medical practices because the clinical community trusted them enough to recommend them directly to patients.

That also means if you see them on Amazon, on random discount websites, or in a big-box store, you should think twice. EltaMD maintains an official list of authorized retailers and has publicly identified dozens of websites selling their products without authorization. Their position is clear: they cannot guarantee the authenticity, safety, quality, or efficacy of any product purchased from an unauthorized seller. That is not fine print. That is a real warning about a real problem.

Counterfeit and gray-market skincare is a genuine issue. Products get stored improperly. They get repackaged. They get diluted. SPF products that have been sitting in a warehouse at temperature extremes may not perform anywhere close to what the label claims. You are putting this on your face, and if the supply chain is not clean, you have no idea what you are actually applying or whether the protection it promises is real.

Buying through an authorized physician partner means the product went from the manufacturer to a licensed provider to you. That chain matters.

Think about what our skin is doing at a horse show. We are outside for eight, ten, twelve hours at a stretch. We are in full sun, reflected off sand, near water, often at altitude. We sweat. We wear hats that protect our heads but leave our faces, necks, chests, and forearms completely exposed. We reapply nothing because we are busy, because the horses need us, because there will be time for that later and then there is not.

This is exactly the environment these products are designed to handle. A zinc oxide SPF that actually protects you. A hydrating serum that keeps skin from getting wrecked by a weekend of wind and sun. A moisturizer that repairs the barrier you have been battering all week on the grounds.

There is also something worth saying about buying skincare from a physician rather than a website. Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. If you pick something up from me at the show, you can ask me what it does, how to layer it, whether it makes sense for your skin type or your concerns. That conversation does not happen when you add something to a cart at midnight. You are not just getting a product. You are getting a recommendation from someone who knows what your skin is up against out there.

The best skincare is the skincare you actually use. Having it right there, at the show, removes every excuse.

Come find us. We will have the good stuff, and it will be the real thing.
