When I started thinking about this new adventure, I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a name. I knew I was going to be starting at horse shows, but I’m hoping that it will extend far beyond these first beginnings. I want to help people show up in their own lives in the bodies they earned. I wanted something to capture BEING THERE with people where they live, not that they have to come to me. I wanted to show that I plan to be WITH THEM during each step. I want this to be a partnership, not just an online website where someone writes a prescription but doesn’t know YOU or your life.
We talk about arena presence. Some riders, some horses, just have that. Look at Skeeter (Hazardouz Material) or Style (Pepto’s Stylin Time). You don’t have to know anything about horses to recognize that when Erin and Abbie walk into the arena on those horses, they are a PRESENCE. They own the arena. They show up. Horses have it easy - long manes, shiny coats, and the stride of a champion.
I want my patients to show up to their own lives the same way. I want them to walk into a room confident, powerful, and a little terrifying. I want them to feel so good about themselves that you might not know her name, but you want to because she feels so good in her own skin. When you walk into the barn, the office, your house, I want you to walk in like you own the place. I want you to have presence.
Being present is also about being there, where people are. In medicine, we have a huge moat of people between patients and doctors. You call, you make an appointment, you check in 14 times online, you drive to an office after you’ve taken a day off work. You get 15 minutes. I can’t imagine how tough my colleagues in primary care have it, because the corporate grind of medicine insists that your problem, your worries, your questions fit in a nice 15 minute box. Until it doesn’t.
In the emergency department, I see people all the time who tell me, “I tried to get an appointment but they can’t see me for months.” “I got a referral, but I’m still waiting to get a call back.” “I asked for a refill, but it’s been a week and it’s not done yet.” This isn’t a criticism of my fellow doctors. It’s an indictment of a system that is failing patients, and failing doctors.
Instead of staying in that rat race, I’m stepping off the track. No office. No staff. Just me, and patients who need help. I’m bringing that care to you, at the show. In your house. In the evenings, weekends, via call or text or sitting by my trailer at the show. Let me be present for YOU, where you have space in your life so you can prioritize your health.
I own my schedule. I don’t have to justify earnings to anyone. I don’t have to meet any quotas. I’m just one doc, and I do have a life and another job (at least right now). If you have questions, let’s get through them. If you forgot something, text me. Let’s talk about it. Something not going right? Let’s jump on a video chat and figure it out. You’re not alone in this. I’ll be present with you.
That’s my promise to you. I’ll be there, where you want care. Whether that’s an unexpected illness or injury, or let’s dive deeper into actually making you healthier. I’ll be with you every step of the way, and I’ll help you show up as a presence in your own life.
